I just finished reading this book for the 4th time!!!! It is a very well written book with a great twist!!!
Set back in a time when women should be married by 18, and men are judged by how they "made" their money, not how much they have!!!
Reginald Mason is a 25 yr old "gentlemen," who lives a lavish life thanks to his Fathers fortune. His Father, Bernard Mason, is a coal miner and although very rich can not be classified as a gentlemen.
The Masons moved into their home for a better life. But because their money was made the hard way, and not by inheritance, they are never going to be accepted by the Earl of Havercroft who lives next door.
So since the Masons are not of the Earls class, he forbids his family from having anything to do with the Mason family.
Since Mr. Mason is snubbed by the Earl, he insists his family do the same in return.
So for 30 years neither family is allowed to speak. Until one day, the Earl of Havercroft's Daughter becomes ruined by running away with a servant of her Fathers.
The Earl had been trying to marry his Daughter off to help him financially since he made some bad investments.
Mr. Mason sees this as his chance to marry his son off, bump up his social class, and get back at the Earl.
Reginald and Lady Annabelle (the Earls Daughter) are forced to be married to benefit their Fathers.
This is a very heart warming and surprising book.
I happened to just see this at Barnes and Nobel and grabbed it!!! It cost me $15.95
